This year, my brother Bob suggested that we time the annual Nunnally reunion to coincide with the solar eclipse. The skilled care center in Grand Is., NE where Mother lives was directly in the path of totality. The crowds were big by Nebraska standards, but nothing like we heard from other parts of the country.
Never too old to watch an eclipse! Skilled care staff was kept pretty busy as totality approached.
We opted to have a family picnic on the front lawn: shade when you wanted it, but nice grass to lie in and watch the event.
Cirque just couldn't quite get the hang of those glasses.
Shadows became sharper as the eclipse approached totality. Sunlight filtering through the trees appeared as little crescent shapes on the ground. The light became muted and with a strange character. It was not dark until the very end.
Mother enjoyed herself, but mostly I think because her family could be there.
Totality! It lasted a little over two minutes. Some people reported seeing lightning bugs. Here, just above the cars and to the left of Mother in her wheel chair, you can see a street light that came on. The light in the clouds in the distance is from the area outside the moons shadow. Straight up, looking at the sun and moon, we had a cloudless sky. My camera auto exposes, and it is much darker than the the pictures shows.
The viewing glasses could come off, and even my simple camera was able to capture the corona. Awesome!
