Dragon Lake, BC-Part 1 (May15-21, 2017)

Dolan Wernet, Paul Fox, and I fished Dragon Lake, BC this Spring and had a wonderful time. Dolan and Paul probably out fished me, but it was still a great experience.

The drive is beautiful, although some of the scenery is a little weird.

We stayed at the Fraser Bridge Inn (FBI), so named for the old bridge crossing the Fraser River and which has been converted into a walking bridge. FBI is literally at the end of the bridge, and it is just a short walk into downtown Quesnel, BC. This is not a wilderness experience.
Oh yeah, we caught some fish. No, this was not the normal fish. Dolan has this thing about brook trout, so we spent half a day checking out this small secret lake in the neighborhood that supposedly has 1 to 2 pound brook trout. Dolan caught one, and I doubt if it was even a 1/2 lb.

Here's Paul with a much nicer Dragon rainbow.

As I said, this is not a wilderness experience. Barkerville Brewery is located in Quesnel, and offers a fine selection of local brew. It was our favorite place to stop after a hard day of fishing. And you always want to try out the local beer.

Actually, it does become quite a wilderness experience if you drive a few miles out of town. One evening we drove up to Barkerville in hopes of seeing some wildlife. Barkerville is on the way to Bowron Lakes Provincial Park, which is a world renowned wilderness canoeing area. Barkerville itself is a former mining town, but now a ghost town being converted to a historical area.

The old cemetery.

We got some great wildlife viewing on the drive, including 2 moose and 5 black bears. The bear above seemed a lot closer when the picture was taken.

Dragon Lake, BC-Part 3 (May15-21, 2017)

We spent most of our time fishing Dragon, located just a few minutes from our hotel.

This is a typical Dragon rainbow that Dolan caught. The fly is a chironomid pattern, if you were wondering.

By the end of the week, it was in the 80's. Dolan here, modeling the latest in fly fishing attire. The sun can be brutal.

The bug hatches were phenomenal. That scum you see in the background of the first picture is from bugs hatching on the water. The second picture is a closeup.

Dolan's best fish of the trip. Paul had some as big, if not bigger. I had one almost as big, and lost another one that went 100 feet into my backing. Makes you wonder how big it was. Great trip with great friends. I will need to try again next year.

Wine for Flies

While fishing in Canada this year, I traded some of my fishing flies for wine.  A true win-win scenario!
