Eastern Europe Day 1 (Sep 24)

The actual tour starts this afternoon, so we spent the morning exploring other parts of Prague, starting with the Jewish Quarter. We visited this cemetery, the Spanish Synagogue, and the museum.

The museum includes the list of Czech Jewish victims of WWII. An almost endless list covers the walls.

Letters and paintings by children who were put in concentration camps occupied one corner of the museum.

The tour started in the afternoon. After orientation, we did a quick walking tour of old town Prague on the way to dinner. Above is Prague's famous astronomical clock. On the upper dial, the outer ring represents an old time standard of "hours past sun set". The next ring in represents our present day 24 hour clock (military time). No daylight savings time, as this is a very old clock. The lower dial represents the days, weeks, months and seasons of the year.

More impressive than the clock are the crowds that come by each hour to witness the time change. That's my excuse for getting such a bad angle on the photo.
