Heart of Europe Trip-Day 7 (Sat 9/30)

Today we toured the Pest side of Budapest. Budapest is actually one city in two parts, Pest on the east side of the Danube and Buda on the west. They were eventually joined when bridges could be built to cross the Danube, no easy task. Our guide Peter described Budapest as a city of statues, with those statues changing every 20 years or so depending upon the whim of those in power. The above monument has gone through a number of renditions.

Budapest is a vibrant city, and has a marvelous subway system. It is the oldest in Continental Europe, and the 4th oldest in the world. Even so, it is clean and modern, and has the fastest escalators we have ever been on. (The picture is an optical illusion you should be able to figure out, but it does look this way when you are riding)

Another statue, but you have to figure out who it is.

Budapest, as well as Hungary itself, is noted for all of its natural hot springs.

The Hungarian Parliament building by day and from the street side.

Parliament building by night, now from the river side. We took a wonderful cruise on the Danube. At night and from the river, this city is beautiful. Don't miss it if you ever visit Budapest.

It is also an opportunity to get a little artistic as Vera did in this photo.
